Science

At Coppice we are extremely lucky to have our very own tailor made science lab which KS2 children regularly have their science lessons in. Pupils are able to learn in an engaging environment with all our science resources close to hand.

Our aim in science is to encourage pupils to be curious and to give them a better understanding of the world around them. Key scientific terminology is introduced in each lesson and lessons are a mixture of useful age-appropriate theory and fun practical enquiries. We also value learning outside of the classroom so teachers plan for outside learning opportunities, trips, visits and visitors.

Science is taught weekly at Coppice as a separate lesson so all statutory requirements can be covered, both in terms of the unit of work, i.e. ‘Light’ and ‘Working Scientifically’. With this being said, we do try and link lessons to year group themes where appropriate.

Formative assessment is planned for and used throughout all year groups. In EYFS, pupils are assessed through set, focused tasks and individual profiles are kept of the children. While in Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers use both formative and summative assessment as pupils take part in start of unit and end of unit challenges or quizzes to help with planning and assessment.
