Set 1

Welcome to Set 1 Phonics!

The resources below will help to support your child learning the RWI Set 1 sounds.

Next you will find an online version of the Set 1 Speed Sounds Book that you were given by school.  You may like to use it to recap what you have learnt or use your pen tool to practise the letter formation.

When you think you know all the sounds, use the Speed Sounds Slideshow (on shuffle) to practise them, you can change the speed they are flashed at or can change it manually.

There is also a link to some phonics games which you can do to help practise the sounds as you work through this set.

The green word cards we use in phonics have sound buttons to help you notice the sounds that are in the word.  As your confidence grows, you won't need the sound buttons to help you and should be able to spot the new sounds (also known as special friends, digraphs - two letters making one sound) in words as you read independently

Once these words can be read on sight, without sounding out, this is a good indication that your child is ready to begin learning the Set 2 sounds.  At each stage, we are always aiming for fluency and comprehension in reading, rather than it being a purely decodeable skill.  We are passionate about children enjoying their reading and feeling successful!

If you have any questions or would like advice, please contact your child's class teacher or email  admin@coppice.redbridge.sch.uk

Green Words - the sounds are taught in the order below, at each new Word Time new words are introduced to include the increase in sound knowledge.

Words to practise reading at each Word Time - Children should know all the sounds for a particular Word Time before they are expected to read the words in that section

Assessment - have a go at reading the words below (real and pseudo). You should get 90% correct if you are ready for Set 2!
