At Coppice phonics is taught using the Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme which helps children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.
We start the program in Nursery (Spring term) with short 10min sessions introducing the Set 1 sounds.
In Reception, the children are assessed on entry and grouped to support their ability. Mostly this involves the children who already know the Set 1 sounds forming a small group and the remaining children staying with their class teacher. As they learn groups of these Set 1 sounds they will be able to read particular words and these will be send home to practise - Green Word Cards (attached below).
As the children start to blend, they will learn the Set 2 sounds and begin reading Ditties (short caption based texts) and then progress through the reading scheme.
In Year 1, the children will pick up where they left off in Reception, once again with an assessment on entry and be regrouped according to their ability. During the summer term in Year 1, the children will take the Phonics Screening Check. Opportunities to practise and strategies to support this are used throughout the year.
From Reception to Year 1, the children are assessed half termly and regrouped where necessary to ensure teaching is pitched at the ideal level to ensure optimum progress for every child. During Autumn term, the Reception children are grouped within their own year group. From Spring term, Reception to Year 2 (only Year 2 children who did not pass the Year 1 Phonics Screening) children will be grouped together.
The RWI scheme will support children with:
- Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple prompts
- Learn to read words using sound blending (Fred talk)
- Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out
- Show that they comprehend the stories by answering 'Find It' and 'Prove It'
- Learn to write the letter/letter groups which represent the 44 sounds
- Learn to write words by saying the sounds and graphemes (Fred fingers)
- To use talk partners
- To answer questions
- To take turns talking and listening to each other
- To give positive praise to each other
