Reading
Reading is fundamental to everything that we do here at Coppice.
Children begin their reading journey in EYFS and KS1 through the teaching of phonics using Read Write Inc (RWI). Home school reading books are sent home which carefully match the level that children are currently working at, children are also encouraged to take home a book of choice.
Our children have access to tailored provision on Google Classroom and a wealth of additional games and resources are accessible on Bug Club. When children have completed RWI they move onto Whole Class Reading alongside access to using the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program.
All children across the school are assessed on a regular and ongoing basis and a range of 1:1 and small group intervention is put into place to help children to keep up. Reading for pleasure is promoted through interesting and engaging book displays around the school and in classrooms, special class book baskets and engagement with national events such as World Book Day.
A love of reading and reading for pleasure is also promoted through reading competitions such as the Masked Reader, regular visits to the local library, classroom and office door displays across the school showcasing what different classes and adults across the school are currently reading, helping the children to see all members of the school community as readers.
Children are also given time throughout the week to read independently. The school also subscribes to myON for children who are using the AR Program. This, alongside the access that EYFS and KS1 have to Bug Club, enables our children to have access to a wide and varied range of online texts which supports us in helping to address book poverty. We are also working on promoting a love of reading and reading for pleasure through the ongoing development of our reading newsletter, the reading section of our school website as well as promotion through our social media accounts.
